Chiesa Madre di San Nicola Vescovo

The Mother Church of San Nicola Vescovo is the main religious building in San Nicola dell'Alto, a small village of Italo-Albanian origin located in the Crotone Presila. It stands in the upper part of the historic center, in a panoramic position, and dominates the town's skyline with its bell tower. A place of worship, meeting place, and collective memory, the church represents one of the architectural symbols and identity of the community, which for centuries has been linked to the figure of San Nicola di Mira, the village's patron saint and protector.

Interesting Facts

The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of sailors and children, after whom the town itself takes its name.

On the occasion of the patronal feast on December 6th, the statue of the saint is carried in procession through the streets of the village accompanied by songs and prayers in the Italo-Albanian language.

The church houses sacred works and furnishings from local families, evidence of the profound connection between religious worship and the history of the community.
