Parco Astronomico Lilio
The "Lilio" Astronomical Park, open since 2016 in the heart of the Sila Crotone area, is one of the most modern and evocative scientific outreach centers in Southern Italy. It is named after Luigi Lilio, the illustrious scientist from Cirò who conceived the reform of the Gregorian calendar in the 16th century, to whom the center pays homage as a symbol of ingenuity and Calabrian roots.
The park, located more than 1,100 meters above sea level, includes a planetarium, an astronomical observatory, a solar observatory, and a radio telescope, and has quickly become a point of reference for schools, visitors, and astronomy enthusiasts.
Interesting Facts
In 2017, the Park's telescope took its first astronomical photograph, capturing the Sombrero Galaxy, 29 million light-years away.
The site, at 1,170 meters above sea level, enjoys some of the darkest and clearest skies in Italy, ideal for astronomical photography and amateur research.
Every year, the Park organizes events and educational evenings dedicated to eclipses, meteor showers, and celestial phenomena visible from the Calabrian sky.
